What is your background/what did you study?
I graduated in Civil Engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais in December 2017. My engineering and construction experiences prior to joining Icon Metal was around fire services installation and the management of other project contracting elements.
Did you always want to work in construction/engineering or did you ever feel that it wasn’t for you?
Since I was very young, I wanted to become a Civil Engineer. I was passionate with the idea of building something from scratch. Nothing has changed in this desire.
How did you come to work at Icon and what was the job when you started?
I got the job opportunity at Icon through networking. A connection amongst mutual friends started a conversation that led to me applying for a Contracts Engineer role as part a larger Contracts Administration Team, which I became part of in April 2019.
Why do you think it’s important to have female representation in construction?
I strongly believe increasing female representation in the construction industry further builds a diversified workplace and can only enhance what Icon Metal will be able to offer as a business. Our representation in construction demonstrates our capability and brings different perspectives, approach and views including how we interact and communicate.
What do you think the industry can do to encourage more women to see construction as a career for them?
It is important to encourage and show young girls the possibilities whilst they are still at school. Non-traditional careers for girls need to be identified and considered as an attractive option. There are many different careers in our industry.
Similarly, giving more opportunities to women already undertaking construction roles will further generate support and understanding. It's easy to follow a successful path and we need to understand how being a role model can influence this.
I want to walk through the city and be proud about knowing "I did that".
What projects are you working on and what do you like about the job?
I am working on Wynyard Place undertaking Miscellaneous Metal Work package as the Project Manager. What I like the most is our diversified scope of work, it's given me the opportunity to get familiar with different Australian Standards and the multiple challenges of coordination and installation.
How would you like to see your career progress? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I want to learn and grow and be seen as being a successful engineer and project manager. I see myself in a senior management position before the 10 years, leading a team and helping my employer to deliver a lot of remarkable projects around Australia. I want to walk through the city and be proud about knowing “I did that”.
Our promise as a contractor is to build community value into every project while delivering professional expertise, exceptional customers service and quality construction.
