Icon Metal can trace its roots right back to the mid 1900s when teenager Albert Pribula, a WWII refugee, came to Australia and found work subcontracting for 'Acme Gate and Fence Company'. Over the years he took his teenage sons Michael and Stephen to work with him on weekends and during the school holidays.

Michael bought the company in 1985, when it was a business of 5 employees, an office and a small workshop specialising in miscellaneous metalwork. In 1996 it was relaunched as 'Icon Metal Fabrications', and in 2016, simply 'Icon Metal'.  Michael retired in 2018 and younger brother Stephen took over as CEO.

Now, with 35 years experience in construction, Icon employs 65 staff, offering a range of services including structural steel, architectural feature stairs, glass, cladding, rigging and project management.

Despite our rapid growth Icon maintains a small-company culture. Our people are our most valued asset. We invest in skill-building such as training and apprenticeships, and support our staff’s development throughout their careers.

In 2021 we moved from our longtime HQ in Granville, western Sydney, to a more spacious premises just around the corner, in Silverwater.

Here we can accommodate our ever-growing team of designers, drafters, project managers and admin staff. We now have a 1600sqm workshop, where our skilled tradespeople have plenty of room to fabricate even the most complex designs.

We are proud of our diversity and inclusivity, which is reflected in the high standard of talent we attract and retain. We have identified the following as areas that reflect our values:

Women in Construction

We are Silver members of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), and we encourage our female staff to take advantage of the benefits this can offer, from seminars and site visits to mentoring.

Our female participation rate is 11% above average for the construction industry, a number we are always working hard to increase.

Our Leadership Team is 50% female.

In May 2021 Icon Metal had our first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan endorsed by Reconciliation Australia. This was a long-held ambition for us, and one that we are committed to fulfilling.

Icon Metal is a proud  sponsor of the Koori Brothers United NRL knockout team, based in Blacktown, western Sydney, who aim to help young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through sport.

Mental Health Awareness

The statistics for poor mental health outcomes for construction workers are extremely sobering and stubbornly high. Icon is a stigma-free company, where it is OK to not be OK, and where we challenge the culture of silence that surrounds mental ill health. Through our partnership with workplace consultants Mental Health Movement,  our staff have access to training, workshops, and we making sure that the message filters through every layer of our organisation: we have each other's backs.
